Phil de Mestre – Sports Podiatrist and Runner

Phil has been consulting as a qualified clinician since 2007 and has been running our Clinic since its inception. He has constant exposure and over a decade’s experience treating runners at Running Science. In addition, he consults as a Sports Podiatrist at the highly regarded North Sydney Sports Medicine Centre, liaising with some of the best Sports Physicians in the country. This over the years has given him experience managing short term niggles and complex pathology for runners and non-runners alike.

Phil loves running and is a running footwear nerd. His love and experience give him valuable insight into the diagnosis and prompt treatment of the runners he sees, whether they be a competitive athlete, or weekend warrior. Phil also competes himself and has notched up a 2hr47 Marathon, and a handy 76 min Half Marathon!

I'm not sure what to do... should I go to see a Physio? Get new shoes? See Phil?

You’ve picked up a niggle… maybe its been there for a few months. Maybe it will go away on its own? Maybe a new shoe will do the trick? You reduce your running or even stop completely; you buy some new shoes but as soon as your load increases again – guess what? That niggle is back. Have you seen a Physio? That can help – but there is so much more that can be done.

Depending on which study you look at, 50% of runners will pick up an injury in a 12 month period. Often at Running Science, runners come in to purchase new shoes and sometimes they’re either injured and/or looking to run more. Sometimes there is an expectation that a new shoe will magically solve all their problems. It usually doesn’t.

Accurate diagnosis is key.

Knowing if you can run through a certain injury can have huge effects on your long-term running goals, and even other things like mental health.
If there is something limiting your running there are many things to consider.

Have you been Running too much too soon?
Are you over training? Or under training?
Have you had your Running Technique looked at?
Are you strong enough in your feet and calves?
Are you strong enough around your hips?
Are your shoes too heavy for you? Or too light?

Services in our runrCLINIC include;

  • Accurate Diagnosis
  • Footwear prescription
  • Foot and Lower Limb Strength Programs,
  • Running Strength Programs
  • Running Technique Sessions

A health professional like Phil, who has extensive professional and personal experience with running, is an extremely valuable resource to help guide you to your running goals.

So if you have that niggle, don’t despair, get some guidance from a Professional Sports Podiatrist who KNOWS running.
