Athletics coaching service

From Running Science

After many years of requests for this service, Running Science now offers athletics coaching. Separate from our social running group and training sessions, athletics coaching focuses on developing athletes for track events.

The coaching service takes place in a small training group setting that enables some 1 on 1 coaching and tailoring of the session to meet the individual athlete’s needs.

Who coaches the athletics sessions?

Chris Jefferis is the athletics coach at Running Science. He currently holds an Athletics Australia Level 2 Coaching certification and coaches distances from the 100m sprint up to 10k.

Chris was a state/territory champion in the 400 (ACT, NSW relays) and 800 (ACT).

He’s also a former academic with a PhD in Economics (Political Economy) from the University of Sydney with experience in tutoring, lecturing and research and has published books and articles in his field, as well as historical research on the culture of athletics training in Australia in the 1950s and 1960s.

Chris is occasionally joined by other Running Science team members to conduct the sessions and provide coaching assistance.

Who can join the athletics coaching sessions?

The group is targeted at athletes aged 15 and up (athletes younger than 15 may need to be accompanied by an adult).

The athletics group is for anyone ranging from elite athletes to beginner level athletes who want to have fun getting faster and experience how regular, intelligently-designed, consistent training can lead to improvement.

When and where do sessions take place?

Coaching takes place at King George Park Rozelle, with some sessions at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre (SOPAC), on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 4pm to 6pm.

Training sessions outside of Tuesday and Thursday such as a Saturday track session or Sunday long run may be scheduled by the coach. Athletes in the group will often meet up to complete the scheduled session together but these sessions are not normally supervised by the coach.

How much does it cost for athletics coaching?

Athletics group membership gets you a training program to cover each week and coaching supervision on Tuesday and Thursday track sessions with the group. It also includes some individual coaching as needed.

The cost to join the Running Science athletics training group is:

  • $25 drop-in session (first week’s worth of drop-in sessions are free)
  • $45 per week for a full wage earner/double income family (includes 10% off running shoes and spikes).
  • $160 per month (includes 25% off 2 pairs of running shoes and 2 pairs of spikes per 12 month period and 15% discount on clinic consultations)
  • $480 for 3 months (includes a 3 monthly preventative biomechanical video screening, 1 x ‘no gap’ Sports Podiatry clinic session for those with qualifying private health insurance cover or a 50% discount on a regular clinic consultation for those without cover per 6 month period, 15% off other additional clinic sessions and 25% off 2 pairs of running shoes and 2 pairs of spikes per 12 month period).

Cost is negotiable for those out of work, from a single income family or anyone undergoing challenging circumstances.

Individually tailored one-on-one coaching sessions are also available (the price will be quoted depending on what the session involves).

You can book a session via the Running Science app.
